Shimosuwa Town is nestled on the side of Lake Suwa and the city has developed as the town of the Grand Shrines of Suwa. The Grand Shrines are the headquarters of over 10,000 Suwa Sect Shinto Shrines in Japan and they have seen many eras of the Japanese long history. In Kamakura period, it enjoyed the special patronage of the Kamakura Shogunate. In the Civil War era from 1490`1600 many feudal lords, such as Takeda, and other Samurai generals paid homage at the shrine. Being at the crossroads of Nakasen Highway and Koshu Highway. In the Edo era, an important role was played by the city.

Adjacent to Wada Pass and Shiojiri Pass, it used to be one of the busiest hot spring post towns on Nakasen Highway. The taste and ambience of the traditional Japanese post town still remains in the down town area, which attracts a lot of tourists.
